While teaching a group Pilates class last week the idea of self-criticism came up. We come to class to feel good & take care of ourselves. But as one of my clients asked, “why are we the most critical of ourselves?” Why is it that when our intention of working out or eating right is to nurture ourselves it often turns into self-criticism when we don’t meet our standards of perfection or don’t like what we see in the mirror?
In this class I shared the idea of Ahimsa, the first of the Yamas in the 8 limbs of classical yoga. Ahimsa is translated to mean non-violence. Most of us are able to be non-violent with our words & actions towards others. It’s when we look at how we treat & talk to ourselves that we find the battle.
How can you be kinder to yourself today?
